Our corporate philosophy is to minimize water use without a change in lifestyle. This is our definition of a win-win scenario. In our journey towards social sustainability we are looking at minimizing our overall environmental impact. This requires us to use less natural resources, to support local initiatives, and educate our community to safe guard our environment. We are committed and take pride in facilitating this journey through the provision of high quality water saving products and systems.
If you feel you are paying too much for water, and you’re looking to reduce your water bill, we have the means to give you a solution that will suite you needs.
The COMPOSTA is a drum on rollers that allows you to conveniently and efficiently convert organic waste into compost:
- It has a sliding door for adding waste. The door is pet and pest proof – even to baboons and children!
- Odors are kept to a minimum due to the aerobic nature of the composting process. Aeration is carried out by turning the COMPOSTA once or twice a day; each time fresh material is added.
- Compost production is far quicker than in a conventioanl compost pile due the aerobic conditions created by frequent mixing. Heat and moisture are also retained, which helps speed up the process.
- The COMPOSTA drum is easily removed from its base and moved to wherever the compost is needed in the garden.
- It is made from robust and durable materials.
The COMPOSTA is made from recycled materials which are locally sourced and assembled to:
- Minimize its carbon footprint; both in terms of transport and fabrication.
- Minimise harmful emissions caused by energy consumption and production of plastics.
- Create employment opportunities in low income communities.

By sharing your success stories or the tips you may have on water conservation around your business or home, you assist us in educating, not only the general reader who is at this stage is possibly researching a school project but also a homeowner who is wanting to go green in their homes.
Our responsibility as a company lies not only in the marketing and sales of our grey water recycling products – but in educating and encouraging debate on how we all can contribute to a wider understanding of grey water systems and safe grey water reuse and recycling.
What we encourage in grey water recycling and reuse is not new. Grey water recycling (or graywater as an alternate spelling) has been encouraged and utilised for many years internationally as a form of irrigation and water savings. South Africa is however still a few years behind the rest of the world when it comes to the recycling and reuse of grey water but we are catching up fast
What is Grey Water?
In the Western Cape water is already an issue and with the growing population and limited resources for collection of water there will come a time when water restrictions and penalties will be permanently in place.
Here are some simply and effective ways of water management for any average household:
Grey water is made up of bath, shower, bathroom sink and washing machine water, it is not advisable to use your kitchen water as this is damaging to plant life because of the fat content.
An average household (family of 4) will use between 300l-400l of reusable water on a daily basis. The residues, soaps etc in the water in diluted quantities can provide useful sulphates and nitrates which some experts say is more beneficial to the garden than clean tap water.
It is advisable to use biodegradable products in the washing machine. The average suburban garden accounts for about 35% of domestic water consumption. Most of the concerns about grey water are to do with the hygiene aspect and odours of the water, but both these aspects are eliminated if the water is re-used as soon as possible and bacteria has not been given the the to produce.
Advantages of Using Grey Water
Lower fresh water usage
Less strain on septic tank
Grey Water has effective nutrients for plant life
Ground water recharge
Cost effective, up to 80% of waste re-used
Avoid penalties on water restrictions
Connect to existing irrigation

The motivation for establishing Sustainable.co.za was to make it easy for the average person or household to improve their environmental ‘footprint’. While many people are aware that serious local and global environmental problems exist, and that they are likely to be contributing to them in their daily lives, they have to do substantial research to find out which activities of theirs are the most environmentally damaging, as well as to find suppliers of goods or services which would help them reduce their ‘footprint’.
Few people have the time or inclination for such research, yet with access to the right products and information it is surprisingly easy to live a much more environmentally sustainable life. Sustainable.co.za hopes to help people achieve this by providing the necessary information and eco-friendly products all in one location.
- Supplies a wide range of eco-friendly goods to create sustainable lifestyles.
- Provides information which alerts people to the local and global environmental situation.
- Provides practical guidance on measures to live more sustainably.
- Provides information on organizations that provide services linked to sustainable living, such as environmental consultancies and renewable energy expertise.
